One Actionable Insight

Theologian Kevin Vanhoozer develops a metaphor for pastoral work: spiritual fitness trainer. “To make disciples is to train men and women to perform the characteristic bodily movements that enable the local church to perform its roles,” he writes.

I love this metaphor. Scripture does compare the Christian life to athletic training (1 Corinthians 9:27). The pastor’s role isn’t to do the exercises, but to help others become fit so they can play their roles.

Takeaway: The pastor’s job is, in part, to increase the spiritual fitness of the church.

Question: If you are a pastor, what exercises will help your people become fit for their roles?
