Hi [subscriber:firstname | default:subscriber],

Welcome to the Gospel for Life newsletter! Our purpose is to help churches make disciples by providing clear, practical, biblical resources for discipleship.

At the end of every month, I send you one actionable discipleship insight, four links to articles I like, and a list of recent and upcoming G4L podcast episodes.

Ideas? Suggestions? Feedback? Just hit “reply”. I’d love to hear from you!

One Actionable Insight

We tend to emphasize the spiritual over the physical. The spiritual is important; the physical is just a means to live the spiritual life. This view is based on an old false teaching called gnosticism, and a misinterpretation of 1 Timothy 4:8.

But this understanding of ourselves is unbiblical. God made as as embodied beings. He cares about us, both body and soul.

According to Gregg Allison, author of Embodied, it’s not even helpful to talk about stewarding our bodies. Our bodies belong in a different category than things like our money, possessions, and time, because these things are outside of ourselves. We are our bodies. Your body is not just something you use; it’s who you are.

It’s time to help people recover a biblical view of embodiment, and to see the importance of the body to what it means to be a person.

Takeaway: Regularly teach on a biblical view of the body, and help people see the importance of living as embodied creatures.

Question: Where do you see incorrect views of embodiment being taught today?
